Kherk Cobain - “No Regrets” / “Pink Ponies” / “End Of The Night” (151 Feva Gang, 2011)
Hip house back. 151 Feva Gang’s “Kush Groove” was one of the more underrated party rap records of the year (in the opinion of this guy who never parties) but it also seemed like it could easily be one of those increasingly common Youtube one offs where the artist achieves something close to four minutes of perfection then immediately disappears.
As the regrettably named Kherk Cobain prepares the incredibly named solo album Adventures Of The Unicorn that fate seems less likely. This eleven minute video spans three songs from the project but it covers so much ground musically - from bmore breaks to foggy r&b synths - that it feels like seven. Most importantly Kherk’s rapping is flexible and engaging enough to handle all of these extremes. The opener “No Regrets” is the choice cut here, though the Future-style sloppy autotune moves on “Pink Ponies” is pretty endearing too: “Kherk Cobain… I can’t sing… for shit bitch… but my pinky ring glist…”
Incredibly fun. Infectious and bouncy and pink and unapologetic. AND: JERSEY.
